There is a peculiar rhythm to Manchester United’s season. With no European football and a 15th place finish last term still casting a shadow, the fixture list feels lighter, yet every match carries more weight. Michael Carrick, steady at the helm until the end of the campaign, is working with a squad that is gradually piecing itself back together.
The upcoming clash with Leeds could prove pivotal, not just in terms of points but also personnel. Several key names are edging closer to returns, including Lisandro Martinez and Benjamin Sesko, both of whom could significantly alter the dynamic.
Sesko’s recent form has quietly become one of the more encouraging threads in United’s season. Eight goals in his last 11 appearances, largely from the bench, suggest a player growing in confidence and importance.
His withdrawal from Slovenia duty raised eyebrows, but it appears to have been a calculated move. The club has been managing “an ongoing issue that United have been carefully managing throughout recent weeks”. The decision to skip international fixtures may now pay dividends.

Reports indicate Sesko is expected to be fit for Leeds on April 13, offering Carrick a timely attacking option. Given United’s need for cutting edge, his availability could prove decisive.
Martinez has been absent since the 1-1 draw with West Ham, a spell that has stretched across five matches and tested United’s defensive depth. His absence has opened the door for others, but there is little doubt about his importance.
Carrick offered a cautiously optimistic update, stating, “[Lisandro is] closer, a lot closer. He’s getting there, so after this one. I think he’ll be alright,”.
With Harry Maguire suspended and Matthijs de Ligt still unavailable, Martinez’s return would bring both balance and bite to the back line. His timing, anticipation and composure on the ball are qualities United have missed.
Elsewhere, the picture is mixed. Bryan Mbeumo’s withdrawal from international duty was described as a “precaution”, and he is expected to be available for Leeds. Noussair Mazraoui has recovered from illness and should also be in contention.
Matthijs de Ligt remains the longer term concern. Sidelined for nearly four months with a back injury, he has yet to return to full training. Carrick admitted, “We’ll keep working as hard as we can to get him back as quick as we can,” though there is growing concern he may not feature again this season.
Patrick Dorgu’s situation is less clear. After an impressive start under Carrick, his hamstring injury has halted momentum. The manager explained, “Pat, unfortunately, is going to be out for a period of time. We are still working through how long that is going to be.”
He added, “At the moment, it is looking a little bit more of a serious note. A few weeks out. How many weeks? We will have to wait and see.”
As United prepare to face Leeds, the potential return of Lisandro Martinez and Benjamin Sesko feels significant. Not just in terms of selection, but in shaping how this team approaches the final stretch.
There is no room for drift now. With rivals playing first, United will know exactly what is required. The pieces are slowly returning, and for Carrick, that may be just enough to push forward with purpose.
