Manchester United have reportedly reached a decision regarding Noussair Mazraoui’s return following his participation with Morocco in the Africa Cup of Nations.
Mazraoui was a key figure for Morocco on their run to the AFCON final, where they ultimately fell to Senegal in dramatic circumstances.
He played in all of Morocco’s seven games, including for 120 minutes in the semi-final triumph over Nigeria and 98 minutes against Senegal. Walid Regragui utilised him both at right-back and left-back.
Mazraoui’s performances earned him a place in WhoScored’s AFCON Team of the Tournament, alongside United teammate Amad.
Although still coming to terms with the loss to Senegal, Mazraoui will inevitably shift his focus to United, aiming to help the club secure a strong end to the season.
Much has changed since the defender left. Ruben Amorim was sacked and Michael Carrick placed in charge as caretaker boss until the end of the season.
Amorim primarily deployed Mazraoui as part of the three-man defence system but he’ll likely compete with Diogo Dalot and Luke Shaw at full-back.
According to the Manchester Evening News, United have decided to give Mazraoui more time off but it’s not a foregone conclusion that he will feature on Sunday against Arsenal.
MEN reveal, “Manchester United have granted Noussair Mazraoui extra time off after the versatile full-back’s Africa Cup of Nations campaign ended in heartbreak on Sunday night, with Morocco losing a dramatic and controversial final to Senegal.”
“Mazraoui is expected to report back to Carrington by the end of the week and could yet make the squad when United face Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday afternoon.”
“The fact that the game is in a later spot over the weekend gives the 28-year-old time to prove he is ready for a club return.”
Arsenal vs. United is scheduled to kick off at 18:30.
