Manchester United remain committed to Rasmus Højlund’s development, despite widespread expectation that the club will sign a new centre-forward this summer.

The Danish striker has been the subject of scrutiny following his £72 million move from Atalanta in 2023.

In two Premier League seasons, he has scored 14 goals—a modest return given the club’s long-standing search for a consistent number nine.

According to ESPN, the 22 year old still retains the belief of those within Old Trafford.

While his output has not yet met expectations, there is hope he can evolve into the elite front-line striker United envisioned when signing him.

United’s interest in experienced forwards remains.

Viktor Gyökeres of Sporting and Napoli’s Victor Osimhen are both being considered. Gyökeres, who excelled in Portugal last term, has been heavily linked, while Osimhen, who spent last season on loan at Galatasaray is another marquee option admired by the club.

The dual-track approach suggests United are open to strengthening their attack without necessarily sidelining Højlund. ESPN’s assertion that there is still “some faith” in the former Atalanta man hints at a longer-term plan rather than an immediate replacement.

There had been speculation that Højlund could be moved on or at least phased out as part of a tactical overhaul under INEOS. But this latest report indicates a desire to nurture his potential rather than discard it prematurely.

Such a stance could influence the club’s transfer priorities. Rather than pursuing a marquee signing to lead the line, United may instead look for a player who can complement Højlund or offer experienced depth in the role.

This recalibration might allow investment in other areas of the squad—centre-back, midfield or right wing, where gaps remain and first-team improvements are also needed.

Gyökeres and Osimhen both profile as high-cost acquisitions.

If Højlund remains central to the long-term vision, United may be more cautious about breaking the bank in attack this summer.
