With Champions League qualification for next season now secured, Michael Carrick has a chance to rotate his Manchester United squad as they prepare to face Sunderland. The Red Devils clinched their place in Europe’s elite competition following a dramatic 3-2 victory over arch-rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford last weekend.
This victory not only confirmed their Champions League spot with three games still to play but also marked United’s first Premier League double over Liverpool in a decade. United’s dominant performance against Liverpool effectively ended their two-year exile from the Champions League, meaning they cannot finish lower than fifth this term. The result was a huge boost for Carrick, further solidifying his credentials as the club’s next full-time manager, even though an official decision regarding his future has yet to be made.
Carrick is determined to finish the campaign as strongly as possible. Though their primary goal has been accomplished, he remains focused on enhancing his long-term job prospects. He’s also hinted at giving opportunities to some of United’s fringe players during the final three matches of the season.

“I think every player in the squad has been absolutely fantastic, I have to say,” Carrick commented at his pre-Sunderland press conference. “Some have played a lot more than others, and I understand from a professional and a playing point of view it can be difficult, but the togetherness and the support that the players have shown, certainly each other, is great to see.”
Carrick also acknowledged the challenges of managing training intensity with fewer matches to play. He stated, “It’s what we need within the group and that’s part of the challenge of doing a lot of training and not having as many games as we would have liked. It’s the balance that we’ve made the most of really, so coming into these games it’s something we’re aware of. I think it’s really something we’re keen on playing well and still trying to get good results as well, but it’s definitely something to be aware of.”
While Carrick will be tempted to make changes, the opposition on Saturday, Sunderland, will not be an easy task. The Black Cats are struggling for form, drawing 1-1 with relegated Wolves last time out. Sunderland are now stuck in 12th place, five points behind the top six, and will be keen to secure an important win to boost their chances of finishing higher.
Sunderland will need a turnaround in fortunes, but it remains unclear if United will rotate their squad for this encounter, particularly with a few injury concerns. United will be without striker Benjamin Sesko, who came off at half-time against Liverpool after aggravating a pre-existing shin injury. He was replaced by Amad Diallo during that match after a collision with Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konate.
Further complicating United’s selection is the absence of Matthijs de Ligt, who is still recovering from a lower back injury. His return remains uncertain. However, Carrick will be pleased with the return of Lisandro Martinez, who has served his suspension and is set to bolster the defence.
Additionally, Patrick Dorgu, who made his first appearance since January off the bench against Liverpool after recovering from a hamstring injury, may now be in line for more game time. Carrick will likely give more opportunities to squad members like Joshua Zirkzee, Mason Mount, Manuel Ugarte, and Noussair Mazraoui, as he looks to finish the season with strong performances.
With a few changes expected, here’s how Manchester United may line up against Sunderland in a 4-2-3-1 formation:Lammens; Dalot, Maguire, Martinez, Shaw; Casemiro, Mainoo; Amad, Fernandes, Cunha; Mbeumo.
