There are only a handful of clubs across the globe that can match Manchester United’s fan following. The club’s rich legacy and heritage have tugged at fans’ hearts for decades, while its historic rise from the Munich disaster has often been cited as an example of triumph over tragedy.

The Red Devils’ unprecedented success under Sir Matt Busby and, later on, Sir Alex Ferguson, further reinforced their presence among the crème de la crème of European football. However, United are yet to win the Premier League or the Champions League since the legendary Scot’s retirement.

Despite their struggles, the Red Devils’ reach across the globe remains strong, as highlighted by recent statistics.

Season Ticket Holders in 42 Countries

According to Mancunian Matters, as cited by the Mirror, United have season ticket holders in 42 countries across the globe. The report states: “In total, 7% of United’s 46,800 season ticket holders live outside the UK – from as far afield as Bahrain and Bermuda, New Delhi and New York.”

“Outside of the UK the largest number of season ticket holders heading to Old Trafford are in the Republic of Ireland, with 1,616, or 3.5% of the total. Next on the list is Norway, with 837 fans holding tickets.”

The report adds that the tiny Mediterranean island of Malta, with a population of just 570,000, is third in the list, boasting 187 season ticket holders. Denmark (95), Switzerland (73), Sweden (62), Iceland (23), the Netherlands (22), Belgium (20) and Poland (8) are the European countries with the most season ticket holders.

Details of Manchester United Season Ticket Holders outside UK

The report confirms United’s massive Scandinavian fanbase, with Norway contributing almost 2% of the club’s season ticket holders. The US, meanwhile, has fewer season ticket holders (66) than expected, which could be due to the distance and possible travel barriers.

Australia has seven season ticket holders, while there are 13 in Thailand and 10 in Canada. India, Russia, Italy and Croatia have a single ticket holder each, further highlighting the Red Devils’ reach across the globe.

The report adds: “There are 209 season tickets, or 0.4%, registered to addresses outside Europe. In the USA the largest number of fans are in New York (12), followed by Illinois (nine), California (seven), Texas (six) and Virginia (six).”

Old Trafford a rendezvous of supporters around the globe

Season tickets must be used for at least 16 of the 19 Premier League games, as per United’s norms. According to the report, the Red Devils have over 330 supporters’ clubs across the world, and the season tickets are often shared between the members who are travelling for games.

Supporters from all over the globe come together to create a raucous atmosphere at the Theatre of Dreams, which was bouncing in the recent 2-0 win over Manchester City. Such was the support that Senne Lammens revealed that it was the best atmosphere he had experienced in his career.

United next face Fulham at Old Trafford on Sunday, 1 February, in the Premier League, and need all three points to remain fourth in the league table.

Final Thoughts

The fact that United’s recent struggles have not affected their reach across the globe says a lot about the club as well as its fan base. However, the Red Devils may need to reclaim their place among Europe’s elite soon if they wish to maintain their popularity among the new generation.
