Fernandes was reportedly seriously considering a deal to join Al-Hilal, who were prepared to launch a £100m bid for him. However, he has decided to stay at United.

“Manchester United said they didn’t want to sell me,” Fernandes said. “They said if I wanted to go I could, but they didn’t need the money.

“I spoke to coach Ruben Amorim who, throughout that period, he was pushing for me not to go.

I want to play at the highest possible level. I want to play major competitions. I know I still can, and I want to be happy doing the thing I love the most.

“For better or worse, this is how I see football, and I’m passionate about football, and this is the decision I’ve made.”

United supporters will be delighted with the news as Fernandes has been their best player over the last few years.

He has scored 98 goals and registered 86 assists in 290 appearances since joining the club in January 2020, helping his side win the FA Cup and League Cup.

While United were not open to offers for Fernandes, they are actively looking to sell several other players to help fund their summer rebuild.

They want to offload Marcus Rashford, Antony and Jadon Sancho, while Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Hojlund could also be sold if suitable offers are made.
