Manchester United are concerned striker Joshua Zirkzee may have suffered a season-ending injury in the 4-1 defeat to Newcastle United, a report has revealed.

On what was a miserable Sunday for the Red Devils, Zirkzee had to be supported off the field in the second half with an apparent hamstring injury, with head coach Ruben Amorim quickly confirming the Dutch international will miss "some games".

Zirkzee has undergone tests to try and determine the severity of the injury and, according to BBC Sport, there are growing concerns that the 23-year-old will not be able to play again this season.

There are just six weeks remaining of the season and so, regardless of the severity of Zirkzee's problem, he faces a clear race against time to make any form of meaningful impact before the campaign comes to a close.

Amorim is expected to offer a formal update on Zirkzee's condition on Wednesday when he speaks to the press ahead of Thursday's Europa League quarter-final second leg against Lyon.

The two sides are tied at 2-2 from the first leg and head to Old Trafford for what seems to be a season-defining fixture.

United will not qualify for the Champions League through their Premier League performance - they sit 14th in the standings with six games remaining - but have a route to Europe's top competition if they can win the Europa League.

Unfortunately, if they are to win the trophy, they will likely have to do so without Zirkzee, who has two goals in his last three Europa League outings. The tournament's final is set for Bilbao on May 21.
