Man Utd reportedly made a late bid to sign Conor Gallagher on loan from Atletico Madrid in the summer transfer window.
The England midfielder joined the Spanish outfit from Chelsea for a fee reported to be in the region of £34 million last summer.
After signing a five-year deal with Los Colchoneros, Gallagher went on to make 50 appearances in all competitions for Diego Simeone’s side, scoring four goals and providing six assists.
Fabrizio Romano reports that Man Utd tried to sign Gallagher in a loan deal “in the last 48 hours” of the transfer window.
However, the Red Devils were told there was “no chance” of that happening as Atleti had “no plans … to let him leave on loan”.
Crystal Palace apparently received the same answer as United when they approached Atleti about a possible loan deal over a week ago. Gallagher spent the 2021/22 campaign on loan with the Eagles, winning the club’s player of the year award.
Benjamin Sesko – I’m getting better every day since Man Utd transfer
Man Utd were the fifth-highest spenders among Premier League clubs this past summer, shelling out £232.4 million on new signings.
Their primary focus was on attacking talent, as Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko arrived at Old Trafford, with no new midfielders coming through the door.
The revelation that Man Utd tried to sign a no.8 will put renewed focus on the future of Kobbie Mainoo, who has only seen 45 minutes of action in the Premier League this season. Ruben Amorim says the midfielder is competing with captain Bruno Fernandes for a spot in the starting lineup.
