Manchester United's decision to sack Erik ten Hag on Monday felt like one that was potentially a little bit too late, nevertheless, it is something that will turn heads across the footballing world.

The Dutchman lost his job following the Premier League giant's 2-1 defeat to West Ham United at the weekend, dropping his now former side to 14th in the table.

United have not wasted any time in their search for a new manager, and have identified Sporting CP's Ruben Amorim as the man to succeed the Dutchman at Old Trafford, a decision that may be of interest to Championship side, Coventry City.

The Sky Blues, while they have struggled in the league so far this season, will be given renewed hope surrounding a transfer deal that happened in July 2023.

Viktor Gyokeres' £20m move to Sporting 15 months ago came with a future guarantee for Mark Robins' club, and with the Swede's current boss potentially on the move, it would not be a surprise if he is as well.

Coventry's Gyokeres sell-on fee could be enacted soon

When the Swede was sold to the Portuguese side ahead of the 2023/24 season, it was revealed that Coventry had a 15% sell-on clause on their former striker. However, this was reduced to 10% in the summer.

Sporting paid €1m to the Sky Blues to lower the clause, meaning that the Championship club have already earned around £2.5m in add-ons since the striker left.

But, that does mean that they will earn less money if Gyokeres is sold. Robins' side will earn 10% of any profit that is made from his sale, meaning that they are in line for a decent cash injection soon if the Liga Portugal's top scorer follows his manager to Man United in January or the summer.

Currently, it seems as though any sale would go through for £60m, despite the Sweden international having a release clause in the region of £85m. Arsenal and Manchester City are both reportedly interested in making a move for the forward, while the Old Trafford update could see Gyokeres make the switch to the red side of Manchester.

Nevertheless, Coventry could be the real winners out of the deal, with a potential £60m deal bringing in £4m on top of the £2.5m that has come in through add-ons.

Gyokeres left Amorim a parting gift

Although nothing has been confirmed yet, it does seem highly likely that Amorim will be confirmed as the new manager of Manchester United soon, and Tuesday night's 3-1 win over Nacional could prove to be his final game in charge of Sporting.

Gyokeres made sure that his boss' potential farewell match was a good one, scoring twice, including a thunderous free kick.

It was a goal that will bring back happy memories for Coventry fans, who will never forget the striker's unbelievable finishing technique in his final season at the CBS Arena, a campaign that nearly culminated in promotion to the Premier League.

While he was forced to miss out with the Sky Blues, 2025 could be the year that Gyokeres finally cracks the English top flight, and for Coventry, it could come with great benefits for them.
