Man Utd to secure one of their best coups in years as Fabrizio Romano delivers major update

While the name Patrick Dorgu hasn’t truly evoked so much excitement amongst Manchester United supporters, he could actually wind up being one of the best hits in January.

In recent months, the Red Devils have been linked with some of the most renowned left-backs in the world, the likes of Alphonso Davies and Nuno Mendes. However, both players have decided to stay put at Bayern Munich and PSG respectively, forcing Man Utd to look elsewhere in their quest to bolster one of their most troublesome departments.

So based on several sources, including Fabrizio Romano, the Premier League giants have now identified Lecce’s Dorgu as the best man for the job, with Ruben Amorim giving the green light. United are accelerating their attempts on this front, with the player’s agent landing in Manchester for crucial talks. Thus, the wheels appear to be in full motion, ahead of direct talks between the two clubs.

Obviously, a 20-year-old lad who plays his football at a club that aspires to avoid relegation to Serie B is unlikely to get the Man Utd faithful jumping off their seats. And yet, he might be the perfect fit for Ruben Amorim’s game.

Since his arrival to the Salentian club in 2022, the Nigerian Dane immediately made waves, first by leading Lecce’s U19 side towards a memorable Coppa Italia triumph, before cementing himself as a regular starter with the first team.

It might not be a big stretch to say that Dorgu possesses every attribute you’d want in a full-back. He has speed, stamina, strength, tenacity and the final touch. Whether he’s sending a delicious cross towards the box or aiming towards goal himself, he’s simply a menacing presence for the opposition.

And while he might be a left-back by trade, he has been fielded as an inverted right winger to accommodate his teammate Antonino Gallo (another fine left-back), and never looked out of place while playing higher up the pitch.

In fact, this role allowed him to showcase his wide range of skills, which includes dribbling and shooting, while imposing himself as arguably the most dangerous Lecce player in the final third, and has already three goals to his name this season.

So between his prowess at full-back and ability to adjust in the final third, playing as a wingback in Amorim’s 3-4-3 system would arguably be his ideal role, as it would allow him to pounce on his incredible skillset and put it to good use in a league that often rewards those who combine pace with skills.

So while INEOS still have a LONG way to go, the road to redemption must begin with one brilliant coup, and perhaps we’ll one day look back on the signing of a relatively unsung player from a struggling Italian club and consider it THE turning point for the falling Premier League giants.
