Here are the City player ratings as Manchester City played out a 2-all draw with AS Monaco in their Champions League league phase overnight. A first-half brace from Erling Haaland seemed to earn Pep Guardiola’s side all three points at the Stade Louis-II. Haaland gave Manchester City the lead in the 15th minute of last night’s match with a quality chip after he got on the end of a Josko Gvardiol through ball. Jordan Teze equalised for Monaco with a stunning strike three minutes later. Manchester City’s number-nine would restore his team’s lead in the 44th minute as he got on the end of a Nico O’Reilly cross to beat AS Monaco goalkeeper Phillip Köhn with a powerful header. Pep Guardiola’s side would hold a 2-1 lead until the 90th minute. Nico was adjudged to have fouled Eric Dier in the City area as he boot-glanced Dier’s face when the Spanish midfielder cleared a dangerous AS Monaco free kick. After a lengthy VAR check, the referee awarded AS Monaco a penalty. Eric Dier sent Gianluigi Donnarumma the wrong way to easily dispatch the penalty to earn Monaco a 2-all draw.
The City player ratings reflect the fact that it was a frustrating night for Manchester City. They had good spells of possession and territory, but failed to take advantage of this. City now has four points after their first two Champions League league phase fixtures. They will feel frustrated to leave Monaco with a point, especially considering the manner in which AS Monaco’s late equaliser came about.
Gianluigi Donnarumma-7/10: Made one quality save in the second half but could do little about AS Monaco’s two goals.
John Stones-7/10: Played at right-back and did his job well before being substituted.
Ruben Dias-7/10: Led the Manchester City defence well throughout the night.
Josko Gvardiol-7.5/10: Set up Erling Haaland’s opening goal with a quality chip and was of City’s better players throughout the match.
Nico O’Reilly-7.5/10: Continued his strong run of recent form. Set up Manchester City’s second goal and continues to grow as a player.
Rodri-6/10: He struggled to dictate last night’s match in his typical fashion. Substituted on the hour mark, and he did look tired.
Tijjani Reijnders-6.5/10: Toiled away and did hit the woodwork in the second half. He wasn’t Manchester City’s worst player against AS Monaco.
Phil Foden-7.5/10: Foden oozed class when on the ball. Was guilty of giving away possession cheaply on occasions, but he played well, in my opinion.
Bernardo Silva-6/10: Not Bernardo Silva’s best display. He looked isolated on the right wing , and when he did get on the ball, he seemed a step off.
Jeremy Doku-6/10: Had a couple of quality moments but not at his best. Replaced by Savinho after on the hour mark as he couldn’t get into the game.
Erling Haaland-8.5/10: Scored a brace and was Manchester City’s man-of-the-match in my opinion. Haaland is in prime form right now and his performance last night showed that.
Savinho-6/10: The Brazilian international just couldn’t get into last night’s match.
Nico-6.5/10: I thought Nico did his job well in midfield after replacing Rodri. He was unfortunate to give away a late penalty but he is seemingly taking steps as a City player.
Matheus Nunes-6/10: Replaced John Stones for the games final stages. Didn’t do anything wrong during his time on the pitch.
