Manchester City are exploring the chances of tempting Paris Saint-Germain and Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma to the Etihad Stadium this summer, as per a new report.
City have made six first-team signings this summer in what has been a major squad overhaul spearheaded by newly-appointed director of football Hugo Viana, with the trio of Kevin De Bruyne, Kyle Walker and Scott Carson all shown the door ahead of the new season.
Injuries and a collective lack of form in the squad derailed Manchester City from winning a fifth straight Premier League title last season, with Pep Guardiola’s men finishing third with 71 points and exiting the UEFA Champions League at the Round of 16 stage.
Rayan Ait-Nouri, Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Cherki and Sverre Nypan make up the four outfield additions, with Marcus Bettinelli replacing Carson as third-choice goalkeeper and James Trafford arriving from Burnley for £27 million to challenge Ederson for the number one goalkeeping spot.
Trafford’s arrival has fuelled an expectation for Stefan Ortega Moreno – City’s number two goalkeeper since his arrival from Arminia Bielefeld in 2022 on a free transfer – to leave as Manchester City look to trim the wage bill and streamline a bloated first-team squad to be ready to fight on all fronts next season.
City were keen to sign Valentino Livramento from Newcastle to replace Walker, who has joined Burnley on a two-year deal this summer, but the finances involved in a potential deal and the length of time remaining on the 22-year-old’s current deal at St. James’ Park mean that there is no expectation of a deal to be done in what remains of the transfer window.
Guardiola and co face Palermo in their only pre-season friendly on Saturday evening, with Jack Grealish, James McAtee and Kalvin Phillips all excluded from the travelling squad to Italy as the English trio hunt for new clubs for the coming campaign.
Manchester City face Wolves in their opening Premier League game of the 2025-26 campaign next week, with Etihad Stadium bosses keen to move on those surplus to requirements and facilitate loan moves for others as they approach the transfer deadline of September 1.
As reported by Orazio Accomando of SportMediaset on X, Manchester City are weighing up the possibility of a swoop for Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, who is in the midst of a contract stand-off with the European champions.
Donnarumma has been strongly linked with a departure from the Parc des Princes this summer, with Manchester United reported to have held internal talks over a potential move for the Italy international.
Manchester City are understood to be open to engineering a move for Donnarumma, with Ederson believed to have agreed personal terms with Galatasaray despite there being an expectation that the 31-year-old Brazilian will stay put into the 2025-26 campaign.
However, should City decide against allowing Ederson to enter the final 12 months of his contract, Donnarumma represents arguably as good an option to replace the six-time Premier League winner, who wanted to move to Saudi Arabia last summer and reportedly remains keen for a fresh start after eight seasons in England.
