As Manchester City continue their rebuild in the summer there will be players who will depart the club to cater for new arrivals. That’s the nature of the beast, and as one cycle ends, another will begin. A new report from Sam Lee for the Athletic has highlighted the City players whose contracts are set to expire over the next two seasons. Of the list, two names stand out as players Manchester City must keep for their future.
As per Sam Lee’s report, John Stones and Bernardo Silva’s contracts are set to expire at the end of the 25/26 season. Phil Foden, Ruben Dias, Rodri and Jack Grealish’s contracts expire at the of the 26/27 season. Question marks surround the futures of John Stones, Bernardo Silva and Jack Grealish. In the case of Stones, his constant injury issues do cast doubts over his future. Sam Lee reports that Bernardo Silva’s future is looked at on a summer-by-summer basis because he is linked with a move from Manchester City every summer. Grealish has to raise his game to show that he’s a part of Manchester City’s future. There is little to suggest that Phil Foden won’t be a key part of Manchester City’s future.
With all that out of the way, Manchester City have to tie down Rodri and Ruben Dias on new contracts. Both players are leaders for Pep Guardiola’s side and will have key roles to play in City’s rebuild.
As Manchester City continue their rebuild they will need leaders to show the way. We will see players of the ilk of Ilkay Gundogan and Kevin De Bruyne either leave City or take on lesser roles. Players will be needed to step up and fill that leadership void. While Ruben Dias and Rodri are already leaders in Pep Guardiola’s squad. The chance will be there for them to become City’s next captain. Based on that and their quality on the pitch Manchester City must sign both players to new contracts.
If Manchester City can sign Rodri and Ruben Dias to new deals that will remove any doubt over their futures. They and City can both move on with their futures secured. Rodri and Ruben Dias, when fit, are two of City’s most important players. Rodri is City’s midfield general and his importance and value to Pep Guardiola’s side cannot be overstated. You do sense that he could be City’s next captain if he recovers from his ACL injury. Ruben Dias is City’s defensive leader and he is clearly one of City’s leaders. We have seen that during his time at Manchester City and during this season. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see him become Manchester City’s next captain at the beginning of next season.
But new contracts for Rodri and Ruben Dias do need to be sorted out in the near future. They are key players now for Pep Guardiola’s side and will be during City’s rebuild. At this stage there is nothing to suggest that either player won’t sign a new contract at the Etihad. But the quicker both players do then City can move onto other priorities.
