Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali is a transfer target for Manchester City ahead of the summer window, as per a new report.
City are bracing themselves for the departure of club captain Bernardo Silva, who is out of contract in June and is expected to leave the Etihad Stadium.
Executives at the Etihad Stadium have placed Nottingham Forest and England star Elliot Anderson at the top of their transfer wish list, with Ballon d’Or winner Rodri also facing an uncertain future at Manchester City.
Hugo Viana and his team are expected to hold contract talks with Rodri’s camp in the coming months but City are understood to be in the market for Anderson and Tonal to shore up their midfield ahead of the 2026-27 campaign.
Manchester City will need Sandro Tonali to hand in €100M transfer request, claims Manchester United insider
While Anderson is leading City’s shopping list for the summer, club officials are actively monitoring Tonali’s contract situation at St. James’ Park, with the midfielder expected to leave the club after a disappointing season for the Magpies.
Tonali is entering the prime of his career and is believed to be drawn to the prospect of competing for winning trophies at an elite club, amid interest from Manchester City, Manchester United and Arsenal.
City are prioritising the signing of a world-class midfielder in the summer and are understood to be frontrunners to sign Anderson, who is also expected to leave Nottingham Forest after the FIFA World Cup.
However, The Athletic have reported that Manchester City will face a few hurdles in their pursuit of Tonali, who is under contract at Newcastle United till June 2029, with the option of an additional 12 months.
The report cites sources who have formed The Athletic that there exists no gentlemen’s agreement between Tonali and Newcastle United that will facilitate a departure from Tyneside this summer.
While a ‘mutual respect and appreciation’ exists from officials at St. James’ Park and the Italy international, it has been stated that Manchester City face a ‘tall order’ in recruiting Tonali to the Etihad Stadium at the end of the season.
Manchester City willing to offer four players in package deal for Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali
Newcastle United are understood to value Tonali at around €100 million, with the midfielder’s future expected to be resolved after the FIFA World Cup across the Atlantic.
It remains to be seen whether Manchester City will formalise their interest in Tonali, though contract talks with Rodri are likely to dictate how the Blues’ midfield shapes up next season.
