Manchester City take on Arsenal later today at the Emirates Stadium in a match that kicks off a gruelling month of fixtures for Pep Guardiola’s side. City are in a race to secure Champions League football for next season and a win today could set them up for that chase and for what lies ahead this month. Yesterday’s results in the Premier League did fall in City’s favour and they must take advantage of that today against Mikel Arteta’s side.

Manchester City currently sit fourth in the Premier League table with 41 points. They are level on points with Newcastle who sit 5th. But Pep Guardiola’s side has a better goal difference than the Magpies. Chelsea and Bournemouth sit a point further back in 6th and 7th respectively on 40 points. It does appear that a tight race is unfolding in the race for a top four finish this season. Any opportunity to give themselves breathing space in the battle for Champions League football must be taken by Pep Guardiola’s side. It appears that one has presented itself based on yesterday’s results.

Newcastle United went down to a surprise 2-1 defeat to Fulham at St. James Park. That was a surprise considering how well Eddie Howe’s side has performed this season. Bournemouth were also beaten 2-nil by Liverpool at the Vitality Stadium yesterday. Chelsea aren’t in action until Monday night against West Ham. If Manchester City can beat Arsenal today it will give them breathing space in the battle to secure Champions League football. It would also allow them to put pressure on Enzo Maresca’s side.

Beating Arsenal at the Emirates will be no easy task for Manchester City. Mikel Arteta’s side will be up for the visit of the world champions. They are also aiming to keep in touch with runaway Premier League leaders Liverpool at the top of the table. But an opportunity is there for Manchester City to seize the early initiative in the battle to secure Champions League football for next season. You do get the sense that they simply have to take it based on what awaits Pep Guardiola’s side on the schedule over the next month.
