Manchester City are holding out for a permanent departure to sanction any exit for Nathan Ake in the winter transfer window, according to SPORT.
Barcelona are strong contenders to sign the Dutchman, who has played just 13 matches across all competitions and started once in the Premier League this season.
Their interest in Ake is primarily motivated by a lack of defensive options, as they have had to field Gerard Martin at centre-back in the absence of Ronald Araujo and Andreas Christensen.
Ake’s situation has reached a tipping point. He has been sidelined by Pep Guardiola’s preference for Josko Gvardiol at left centre-back and Nico O’Reilly at left back.
Although Ake remains under contract with Manchester City until 2027, he is reportedly interested in a move to Camp Nou.
He views it as a chance to regain his spot in the Netherlands squad. Barcelona want an initial loan with an option to buy.
However, City prefer a permanent transfer over a loan, aiming to streamline their squad and fund incoming deals.
Ake’s ability to play centre-back and left-back would give Barcelona valuable depth and experience for what will be a demanding second half of the season.
Hansi Flick’s men are four points clear of rivals Real Madrid at the top of La Liga, leaving them on course to defend their league title.
The Catalans will have the opportunity to add more silverware in the Spanish Super Cup, which begins with a clash against Athletic Club on January 7.
