Having succumbed to a star performance from the player just this week, Manchester City have now been strongly linked with interest in Sporting’s Viktor Gyokeres.
The 26-year-old centre-forward was at the forefront of a demolition job issued by Sporting CP on Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City this week as the Etihad Stadium club fell to a third consecutive defeat for the first time since April 2018.
It was Gyokeres who responded to Phil Foden’s early strike to put Manchester City ahead, before a second-half penalty and goal on the break would issue further blows after Maximiliano Araujo put Sporting ahead within 30 seconds of the restart.
Given the player’s outstanding form since arriving in the Portuguese capital from Championship side Coventry City in July 2023, it comes as no surprise to see the striker linked with another big move elsewhere in European football.
And despite Erling Haaland continuing to break records and add to an already-remarkable goalscoring tally at Manchester City, it appears as though officials within the club are keen to further rubber stamp their mark at the top of the sport.
According to the information of Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, Manchester City remain one of the clubs ‘seriously interested’ in the talents and services of Sporting CP and Sweden striker, Viktor Gyökeres.
It is reported that the 26-year-old can leave the Portuguese champions for a fee of between €60 million and €70 million, with an agreement on the matter in place between the striker’s representatives and Sporting CP.
Reiterated links to the Etihad Stadium follow previous reports from Plettenberg detailing Gyokeres attracting interest from fellow Premier League giants in Arsenal, Liverpool, and Chelsea.
Gyökeres was originally signed by Sporting CP on a five-year contract, with Ruben Amorim and Hugo Viana sanctioning a club record transfer fee of €20 million plus €4 million in bonuses.
As for Coventry City, who continue to watch Gyokeres with pride, the Championship club retain a financial interest in the player having secured themselves 10 to 15 per cent of a future transfer, while Sporting set a release clause at €100 million.
The fee mentioned in recent reports emerging across the game would represent remarkable value for Viktor Gyokeres, whose 66 goals and 19 assists in just 67 appearances under Ruben Amorim would go a long way to changing the fortunes of any club lucky enough to sign him.
