Manchester City’s transfer window was about ticking boxes, not chasing headlines. They secured a long-term successor to Ederson, recruited Rayan Ait-Nouri to fill a long-standing gap at left-back, brought in Tijjani Reijnders as a player reminiscent of the 2021 version of Ilkay Gundogan, and added the flair of Rayan Cherki to soften the blow of Kevin De Bruyne’s absence.

At a net spend of around £110m, City not only refreshed their squad but lowered the average age from close to 30 to 25.6. This is succession planning, the kind of foresight that ensures the team remain competitive well beyond the Guardiola era.
The one oversight remains at right-back. Rico Lewis and Matheus Nunes are interim fixes, but neither represents the permanent solution required. That flaw has already been exposed in recent defeats, and the extent to which it undermines progress will shape how this window is ultimately judged.

Pep Guardiola is renowned for his animated presence on the touchline, but he has long stressed the importance of squad balance. For him, a bloated group meant more headaches than harmony. The exits of Ederson, Gundogan and Manuel Akanji eased the wage bill and reduced his selection dilemmas.

Jack Grealish, Vitor Reis and Claudio Echeverri have gone on loan, further trimming numbers. Guardiola can now concentrate on the players he trusts, keeping the atmosphere competitive yet manageable. As one observer noted, “the manager looks more at ease with a leaner squad and clearer hierarchy.”

Attention now shifts to whether Gianluigi Donnarumma can settle into City’s defence. If the Italian fails to integrate quickly, the right-back issue may become pressing. The club are otherwise well stocked, but Guardiola will demand consistent output from wingers Jeremy Doku, Savinho and Oscar Bobb. If those three fail to deliver in terms of goals and assists, the creative supply line to Erling Haaland may require reinforcement in January.

City’s summer involved heavy spending, following on from substantial January business. Yet the departure of high earners has eased financial pressure. This rebuild feels like a two-part process, with the majority of foundations already in place. Unless injuries intervene, the club will treat January as an opportunity rather than a necessity.

This was a transfer window defined not by extravagance but by structure. It has given Guardiola a refreshed squad, but also left a question hanging over right-back. The answer may determine whether City’s planning proves as meticulous as it first appeared.
