Manchester City are enduring their worst season since the arrival of Pep Guardiola. After winning the Premier League title four times in a row, the Citizens are now focused on finishing inside a Champions League spot this season. After a terrible end to 2024, things have stepped up this year.

During the January transfer window, City signed a number of players in order to turn things around. Even though their form has picked up, it has been nowhere near what Guardiola would have hoped for. They were knocked out of the Champions League in the playoffs by Real Madrid. However, they are still in the FA Cup, where they will take on Nottingham Forest in the semi-finals. As for the Premier League, they are currently fifth in the table.

The incomings look set to continue in the summer as well, as City look to get back to fighting for the Premier League and Champions League trophies. One of the players they are looking at, as per Foot Mercato, is Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa. Even though the current season has not been awful compared to other goalkeepers, it certainly has not been the best for current Manchester City No. 1 Ederson. The Brazilian’s fitness has also been a cause of concern for Guardiola, with Stefan Ortega starting a number of matches due to Ederson’s form and fitness issues.

As per reports, Diogo Costa’s profile is the one that everyone at the Etihad Stadium is keen to consider. Under contract until 2027 with Porto, the goalkeeper, who is a regular for Portugal, has a release clause of €75 million. Jorge Mendes, the goalkeeper’s agent, is pivotal to the negotiations, and talks with City are currently ongoing.

If Costa is to arrive, it would most probably see Ederson departing the club he signed for in 2017 from Portuguese club Benfica. So far, the Brazilian has played 365 times for the Manchester club. During this time, he has won the Premier League title six times and the Champions League title once, in 2023.
