With Kyle Walker having left Manchester City on loan for AC Milan and his future remains up in the air, and Kevin De Bruyne having announced his departure from the club at the end of this season, Pep Guardiola’s side will need new leaders to guide the club in their next era. But when you look at Pep Guardiola’s side play you can see that Manchester City’s next batch of leaders are revealing themselves. That’s a good sign for the future of Manchester City that is playing out on the pitch.

Earlier this season we saw that Erling Haaland was named captain by Pep Guardiola for Manchester City’s 4-nil win over Newcastle. Pep Guardiola revealed after that particular game it was his choice to make Haaland captain on that occasion. So Erling Haaland is a player who could become a leader at Manchester City. His leadership has shone through during City’s rough patch this season.

There are two obvious candidates to further advance as leaders at Manchester City or become captain. That is Ruben Dias and Rodri. In the case of Dias, he is an obvious choice to become Manchester City’s next full-time captain. He is already a leader for Pep Guardiola’s side. He appears to be the most obvious selection to take over the captain’s armband. Rodri is another provided that he recovers from his ACL injury. He is an inspirational figure for his team and is the barometer for his team.

Another potential leader appears to be new signing, Nico. The Spanish midfielder has wasted no time in setting standards on the pitch. You can see Nico directing his teammates in midfield and at set pieces, either offensively or defensively. There is a leadership quality to his play which should grow as he becomes accustomed to life at Manchester City.

Summary.

Manchester City’s next batch of leaders are revealing themselves. It could be Rodri, Ruben Dias, Erling Haaland and Nico that step up when De Bruyne leaves and while Kyle Walker’s future remains up in the air. Bernardo Silva and Ilkay Gundogan are two more of Manchester City’s leaders but their futures are also up in the air. So City’s next batch of leaders will be required to step up. You can see who they could potentially be when you watch City play and look across Pep Guardiola’s squad.
