Manchester United have responded to claims that they made an enquiry for Jurgen Klopp following his departure from Liverpool.

Man United are still looking for the perfect successor to Sir Alex Ferguson since his exit from the Old Trafford club in 2013 and have appointed 11 different managers in permanent and temporary roles since then.

Michael Carrick is in the interim charge of the Red Devils for the second time after replacing Ruben Amorim, but the Portuguese may have never got the job in the first place had Man United got their wish to land Klopp.

They wanted to replace Erik ten Hag ahead of and during the 2024-25 campaign and Klopp’s agent has claimed that they made enquiries after the German left Liverpool at the end of the 2023-24 season.

However, Man United have denied they made any enquiry for Klopp when approached by The Athletic.

The German made it clear after spending eight-and-a-half years in charge of Liverpool that he would not coach any other club in England.

He has since returned to football after a break, taking up a role as Red Bull’s head of global soccer in January last year.

It is unknown whether Man United indeed attempted to lure him to Old Trafford, but he would not have been tempted to join the Red Devils given his connection with Liverpool and their fans.

Amorim got the job instead after Ten Hag was dismissed, taking over in November 2024.

However, he did not do enough to impress and was sacked last month and Carrick is looking to put himself in a favourable position ahead of the appointment of a permanent manager at the end of the season.

Man United have won four and drawn one of their five Premier League games under him so far, and their performances over the coming 12 games could determine his future.
