Manchester United legends Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt claim they find the ‘Class of 92’ tag cringeworthy.

The famous Class of ’92 is a generation of players celebrated by Manchester United fans, after bring lots of success to the club after emerging from the academy.

Along with David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, Gary Neville and Phil Neville, the duo are iconic figures within football history due to the consistent success they enjoyed at United.

However, despite being celebrated by every Red I know, Scholes and Butt recently admitted they don’t like the tag and find it embarrassing.

Speaking on the Football’s Greatest Eras podcast, Scholes asked Butt: ‘Did you like that Nick? I didn’t like that.’

Butt replied: ‘No, I didn’t like it.’ Scholes added: ‘I don’t like it now.’

Butt continued: ‘I cringe when I hear it. But it is what it is. It’s what we’ve been known for since we all came through with Sir Alex Ferguson.

‘And yeah, it’s something that I do cringe about and it just becomes something probably bigger than it really was, if I’m honest with you’.

Scholes then responded: ‘Do you know why I feel bad about it? Cause there was like another 10 or 15 of us the same year’.

‘Yeah,’ said Butt. ‘I also think it seems like we were the ones that won it but if it wasn’t for older pros and the more experienced players there would’ve been no ‘Class of 92’ I’d say.

‘But yeah, a bit cringey for me, but it is what it is and that’s what we’re known for and embrace it, I would say’.

Scholes made 718 appearances for United throughout his career as a one club man, while Butt played for United in 387 games.

Paul Scholes genius, Nicky Butt criminally underrated

I will argue with anyone that Butt was criminally underrated as a player.

Winning 14 trophies at United, the midfielder scored 26 goals and recorded 21 assists before leaving to continue having a decent career as a Premier League player.

People tend to forget he was integral to United’s setup for many years.

Meanwhile, Scholes was the player with the most ability to emerge from the Class of ’92.

Scholes scored 155 goals and recorded 82 assists for United. He is, without question, the best midfielder I have seen wear the Red shirt.
