Manchester United have held talks to sign a midfielder on loan until the end of the season, according to journalist and transfer insider Ben Jacobs.
Man United want to bolster their options in the middle of the park at the Old Trafford club and could look to bring someone in.
Jacobs did not disclose the identity of the player in question but he insists the Red Devils have held talks with him.
The unknown midfielder has Premier League experience and is currently playing outside of England.
Man United have named Michael Carrick as their interim head coach until the end of the season and are ready to support him during the ongoing winter transfer window.
They could do with a new midfielder having tried to sign Carlos Baleba from Brighton & Hove Albion last summer.
As Jacobs pointed out, there are no guarantees that Man United will end up signing the player in question, but enquiries have been made.
The Red Devils have also been linked with Crystal Palace star Adam Wharton and his Nottingham Forest counterpart Elliot Anderson, but getting either player this window has been ruled out.
Man United return to Premier League action tomorrow when they host Manchester City, and Carrick will be eager to hit the ground running by picking up all three points.
The Red Devils are expected to name a new permanent manager at the end of the season but their interim boss will be desperate to prove himself and boost his chances of getting the job permanently.
Carrick needs all the help he can get if Man United are to secure Champions League football for next season, and quality additions to the squad this month could come in handy.
