Michael Carrick kept his cards close to his chest when asked for an update on Benjamin Sesko’s fitness.

The big Slovenian has been in fine form of late and added another goal to his catalogue as Manchester United dispatched Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.

He scored United’s second of three goals on the day, clumsily bundling Bruno Fernandes’ headed cross over the line via a deflection from Freddie Woodman. The goal stood despite appearing to touch Sesko’s hand on the way over the line.

Sesko was hooked at half-time, though, after being sent flying into the advertising hoardings following a shoulder-to-shoulder collision with Ibrahim Konate. He was later spotted hobbling back to his seat on the bench, not moving particularly freely.

Speaking at full-time, Carrick revealed he had aggravated a pre-existing issue with his shin.

He told Sky Sports: “He's been carrying a shin problem for some time, he got pushed and caught the bit that's been causing him some problems.”

The severity of Sesko’s injury remains to be seen, though United do not have much left to play for this season after victory over Liverpool confirmed their place in next season’s Champions League.

They have three matches left to play, though, with visits to Sunderland and Brighton coming either side of a home Premier League meeting with Nottingham Forest.

Sesko’s goal against Liverpool was his 11th in the Premier League this season. He has come into his own since Carrick stepped in as Ruben Amorim’s replacement, with eight of his 11 goals this season coming during the Geordie’s tenure.
