Amad Diallo and Patrick Dorgu also impress as Matheus Cunha makes big impact off the bench
Manchester United dominated the 198th Manchester derby with a 2-0 win in a perfect start under interim head coach Michael Carrick.
With a statement shake-up made by Carrick, United kept Manchester City on the defensive with countless first-half chances, before Bryan Mbeumo broke the deadlock in the second period at Old Trafford.
United swiftly followed their opener with another goal by Patrick Dorgu, which went unanswered by struggling City.
United also had three goals ruled out for offside and tested Gianluigi Donnarumma several times as well as hitting the woodwork twice on a dream afternoon.
Senne Lammens 6
Was there in support of Diogo Dalot following Max Alleyne’s header, preventing City from getting a first-half lead. Easily shut down a Bernardo Silva corner and was in full control of the box.
Diogo Dalot 5
Faced an arguably lucky escape after a knee-high tackle on Jeremy Doku, which could have easily been an early red. Sloppy pass down the right wasted an opportunity created by Kobbie Mainoo for Amad Diallo, but continued to play with intensity throughout.
Harry Maguire 6
Had the first chance at goal, with a pinpoint delivery from Bruno Fernandes met by Maguire with a header, which should have gone in, but bounced off the woodwork in the first three minutes.
Lisandro Martinez 6
Rescued United with a slide to deny Erling Haaland his first glimpse at goal, forcing the ball over.
Luke Shaw 5
Was vital in preventing an early Haaland set up for Phil Foden, shutting down an Antoine Semenyo chance as well, but also conceded fouls on Rodri and Haaland, ending chances for United.
Kobbie Mainoo 6
Mainoo was handed his first Premier League start since May, in a move which proved decisive in the first half, providing multiple chances on the counter.
The youngster dealt well under the pressure, but stepped on Rodri’s ankle to concede a silly foul.
Casemiro 6
Continued with his trademark ability to turn defence into attack, setting up Fernandes for a second-half solo effort, and providing crucial support with a rebound shot on target, only denied by Donnarumma’s big toe.
Bruno Fernandes 7
Was the light in a dark time at United and continues to shine in this interim stage, setting up Dorgu for a shot on target mere inches away.
Moments later, he got the better of Donnarumma again, working himself around the ‘keeper and Nathan Ake, only stopped by the offside flag. Eventually set up Mbeumo for the first goal of the match.
Amad Diallo 8
On his return from the Africa Cup of Nations, Amad slotted back in with ease, creating multiple opportunities on the flank for Mbeumo, Fernandes and Mainoo. Denied his own dramatic 90th-minute goal as he struck the post.
Patrick Dorgu 9
Found himself inches away from goal in both halves, but was continually denied by excellent Donnarumma saves, until the 76th minute, when he found a gap to give United their second.
Bryan Mbeumo 9
Back from AFCON duties, continued to be a threat at centre-forward, and his 65th-minute goal was worth the wait, with a strike hit with such speed that even Donnarumma couldn’t stop it.
Matheus Cunha (Mbeumo, 71’) 8
Brought on after a dominant performance from Mbeumo. Cunha was impactful off the bench and squeezed in a cross to set up Dorgu for the second goal.
Manuel Ugarte (Casemiro, 81’) N/A
Mason Mount (Fernandes, 91’) 7
Super-sub scored with his first touch, but it was chalked off for offside.
Ayden Heaven (Shaw, 91’) N/A
Not used: Benjamin Sesko, Altay Bayindir, Tyrell Malacia, Leny Yoro, Jack Fletcher.
