Manchester United suffered a major transfer blow on Friday as news broke of Chelsea hijacking their summer deal for Sporting CP’s Geovany Quenda.

The Blues offered a more lucrative deal for both the club and the player and as a result, despite a lot of hard work behind the scenes, the Red Devils missed out on the Portuguese wonderkid.

With Diogo Dalot’s future also up in the air as per reports, Ruben Amorim needs another wingback in the summer. January signing Patrick Dorgu can play on the right and Fichajes have claimed United have an option for the left flank.

Real Madrid’s Ferland Mendy is on United’s radar and his defensive attributes would bode well for the Red Devils who have leaked goals left right and centre this season.

Mendy interest

The Frenchman is versatile as well, capable of playing as a left-sided centre-back as well as a left wingback. And his €18 million market value suits United given their current financial situation.

“Ferland Mendy’s future at Real Madrid remains a mystery. This situation has sparked the interest of several European clubs, including Manchester United , who see Mendy as a significant market opportunity.

“The English club, in the midst of a defensive reinforcement search, has set its sights on the Real Madrid left-back.

“Mendy is seeking a much higher salary than what Real Madrid has offered him so far, which has created uncertainty about his future in the Spanish capital.”

Wage demands

The France international currently earns €200,385 gross per week (via capology), and the report states the 20-time English league champions are “willing to promise him a higher salary”.

Given his age and considering past mistakes at Old Trafford, INEOS are unlikely to break their wage structure for the Real Madrid ace.

The former Olympique Lyon ace only has two assists this season and is quite injury-prone. And he has not exactly set the stage alight when it comes to the attacking part of his game.

Amorim wants wingbacks who are comfortable on the ball and can bomb forward at will and the two-time Champions League winner does not fit the bill.

So for now, take this report with a huge pinch of salt, especially as the Spanish outlet also incorrectly states Mendy is set to become a free agent in the summer.
