Manchester United are ‘seriously interested’ in signing Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United as the club target Premier League experience.
Midfield is the area of focus for the Red Devils in the summer window, with Casemiro due to depart when his contract expires in July, and doubts over Manuel Ugarte and Mason Mount.
United have been linked with a wealth of midfielders in recent months, including Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson and Brighton’s Carlos Baleba.
According to the iPaper, Anderson is the club’s first choice, though Tonali has emerged as a serious target with the former leaning towards a move to Manchester City.
Speculation around Tonali’s future has been prominent since the January transfer window, amid rumours of an approach from Arsenal.
Newcastle do not want to sell the Italy international and value Tonali ‘in excess of £100m’, though the absence of Champions League football next season could see the 25-year-old push for an exit.
Manchester United owners INEOS favour pursuing deals for players with Premier League experience, following the success of signings Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo.
Tonali’s box-to-box style is viewed as an ideal complement to Kobbie Mainoo as the club restructure their midfield.
