Sam Johnstone could be handed a surprise route out of Wolves by Manchester United. The 33-year-old is expected to leave this summer as Wolves overhaul their goalkeeping options following relegation.

Alan Nixon reports that United are considering a move for their former youth-team keeper as cover for No.1 Senne Lammens.

Johnstone came through United’s academy and had loans at Walsall and Villa. He joined Albion in 2018 for an initial £6.5 million and made 167 appearances across four years.

He then spent two seasons with Crystal Palace before signing for Wolves in 2024. Johnstone has played only 27 times in two years at Molineux, missing the season’s final months with a shoulder injury.

Emi Martinez’s future is also uncertain, with Juventus eyeing the Villa goalkeeper after hopes of landing Alisson faded. Gazzetta Dello Sport says the Italian club are monitoring the situation.

Martinez appeared close to leaving Villa last summer but a proposed switch to Manchester United did not materialise. The 33-year-old then helped Unai Emery’s side win the Europa League and claim a top-four Premier League finish.

Villa are not actively seeking a sale, though a strong offer could prompt a rethink. No movement is expected until after the World Cup, with Martinez aiming to help Argentina defend their title.
