Ruben Amorim should be given three years to succeed at Manchester United, according to the club’s co-owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

Amorim has endured a tough time since replacing Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford in November 2024. He has amassed a win percentage of just 40% in his 50 games across all competitions, a figure that drops to just 29.41% when only Premier League fixtures are considered.

United finished 15th in the Premier League last season, the club’s lowest league finish since last being relegated in 1974. He has also come under increasing pressure to adapt his 3-4-2-1 formation, which has failed to bring consistent results to date.

Despite those struggles, Ratcliffe has insisted that Amorim needs time to bring success to the club. The 40-year-old won two Portuguese titles with former club Sporting Lisbon and Ratcliffe has said that ‘overnight success’ is not realistic.

Speaking to the Times’ The Business podcast, Ratcliffe said: “He has not had the best of seasons.

“Ruben needs to demonstrate he is a great coach over three years. That’s where I would be. The press, sometimes I don’t understand.

“They want overnight success. They think it’s a light switch. You know, you flick a switch and it’s all going to be roses tomorrow.

“You can’t run a club like Manchester United on knee-jerk reactions to some journalist who goes off on one every week.”
