Sunderland will be keeping a close eye on Jobe Bellingham after the former midfielder was linked with Manchester United, and a 15 per cent sell-on could bring a windfall.

TEAMtalk reports United are monitoring midfield options, with Bellingham among those they have done work on, alongside Carlos Baleba, Ederson, Elliott Anderson, Sandro Tonali, Adam Wharton, Noah Sadiki, Matheus Fernandes and Alex Scott.

Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain are also credited with tracking his progress, as they have been since his Birmingham City days. Sunderland would be due a payment from any future sale, though the final sum depends on how the clause is applied.

If it covers the full fee, a £40 million transfer would return £6 million to Wearside, but if it applies only to profit the figure would be lower.

Bellingham joined Borussia Dortmund last summer for £27.8 million plus £4.2 million in add-ons, signing a five-year deal after helping Sunderland win promotion. His development has accelerated in Germany, where he has started 18 of the club’s last 20 matches.

His first Bundesliga campaign has brought 31 league appearances so far, and 48 in all competitions with one goal. At Sunderland he made 90 appearances and scored 11 goals.
