Barcelona captain Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s recovery from back surgery is progressing well. The goalkeeper is expected to be fully fit by the end of November and ready to return to action from January. However, his future at the club remains uncertain.

Barça continue to summer arrival back Joan Garcia as their No. 1, and no changes are planned there.

As such, all scenarios are on the table with Ter Stegen’s future, with several clubs already enquiring about a possible loan or transfer, according to SPORT.

Manchester United, Newcastle, Tottenham interested

Indeed, as per the report, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, and Newcastle United have all asked about Ter Stegen’s availability ahead of the January transfer window.

Meanwhile, AS Monaco continue to follow his situation after failing to convince him to make the switch over the summer.

Most of the clubs involved would favour a loan deal with an option to buy, but Barça will not sanction any move unless Ter Stegen himself pushes for it – something that has not yet happened as he awaits his comeback.

Ter Stegen knows opportunities could be limited at Barcelona, and with the World Cup on the horizon, he may have to consider his options. For now, however, the German remains committed to seeing out his contract, which will have two and a half years left come January.

Barcelona mindful of delicate situation

Meanwhile, Barcelona are mindful of how delicate the goalkeeping situation is. Joan Garcua’s injury forced them to rely on Wojciech Szczesny and even recall Diego Kochen from the Under-20 World Cup to ensure Hansi Flick had reliable cover.

The season is long, and plenty could still change, so Ter Stegen remains part of the picture despite no longer being the first-choice option.

In three months, when the transfer window opens, Ter Stegen must also be re-registered with La Liga. Provided the club return to the 1:1 rule, it should not be an issue.

Barcelona have pledged to respect whatever decision Ter Stegen makes, offering every facility should he request a loan to secure playing time elsewhere, while keeping the door open for him to stay as team captain and fight for minutes.

The coming months will be decisive, with all parties taking time to carefully consider the next steps and ensure the goalkeeper makes the choice that best suits him.
