Both sides able to secure European football at Old Trafford this afternoon
Kobbie Mainoo scored a fine late winner to quell a valiant Liverpool comeback and a return to the Champions League for Manchester United. The hosts were untouchable in the first-half and raced to a two-goal lead thanks to the returning Matheus Cunha and a clumsily bundled finish from Benjamin Sesko.
But Liverpool were renewed after the break and levelled the tie through Dominik Szoboszlai and Cody Gakpo, before Mainoo celebrated his new long-term contract with an emphatic winner in front of the adoring Stretford End. The victory sees United complete a rare league double over Liverpool, who were without eight first-team players for the short trip across the northwest, but will hope to welcome some fresh faces back into contention ahead of hosting Chelsea next week.
There was good news for United ahead of the match as Luke Shaw and Matheus Cunha, who had both been injured, made the starting lineup, but there is fresh concern over the condition of Benjamin Sesko, who hobbled off at half-time.
