Manchester United are looking for a new goalkeeper in the transfer market to compete with Andre Onana. Fichajes has reported they are ready to offer €40 million to sign Real Madrid‘s backup goalkeeper, Andriy Lunin, in the summer transfer window.

Lunin is no less than a world-class goalkeeper. The Ukrainian played an integral role in Madrid’s La Liga triumph and UEFA Champions League triumph in the absence of Thibaut Courtois. He is too good a goalkeeper to play as a backup. However, with the return of Courtois, he has again been warming the bench.

He is a rising star defined by composure and agility. His imposing frame pairs with lightning reflexes, making him a formidable shot-stopper, particularly in one-on-one situations. Lunin’s distribution is a standout trait—his precise throws and kicks launch counterattacks with ease, reflecting a modern keeper’s skill set.

Calm under pressure, he exudes confidence during high-stakes matches, as seen in his Champions League cameos. His positioning and anticipation thwart danger early, while his work ethic shines in training. At 26, Lunin’s technical prowess and mental resilience mark him as a future elite goalkeeper.

Lunin has conceded 4 goals and kept 2 clean sheets in 3 matches in the La Liga 2024/2025 season. That means when Lunin is in goal, his team concedes a goal every 68 minutes. Andriy Lunin’s per 90 minutes goals conceded stat is 1.33. In terms of raw goalkeeping, he’s saved 4 of the 8 shots faced, meaning Andriy Lunin’s save percentage is 50.00%.

How will the move be feasible?

United need competition for Onana and Lunin is a very good option. Real Madrid are looking to extend the contract of Lunin, given that he is attracting interest from many clubs. The €40 million offer might be accepted by Madrid, but for the move to happen, United might need to make the promise that he will be the starting goalkeeper for the side. If he still remains a backup goalkeeper to Onana, then the situation and the move will not be beneficial to him.

So, we have to wait till the summer transfer window to see what finally happens regarding this saga. It will definitely depend on the intentions of Lunin if the move has to be successful or not.
