Ruben Amorim likely to ring the changes after epic extra-time thriller against Lyon in the Europa League

Ruben Amorim will assess his Manchester United squad after their Europa League exertions against Lyon to determine his lineup for Sunday’s clash with Wolves.

The Red Devils are recovering from one of the most extraordinary and dramatic European fixtures ever witnessed at Old Trafford on Thursday evening, when three goals inside just seven minutes during the final stages of extra time saw the hosts win 5-4 on the night and 7-6 on aggregate to book a semi-final showdown with Athletic Bilbao.

A number of United’s players can be forgiven for tiredness after such a remarkable contest that will have drained both their energy and emotions, and it would not be a surprise to see Amorim make several changes for the visit of Wolves in the Premier League with nothing to play for in the top-flight and all attention now focused on winning the Europa League, which would give them direct qualification for next season’s Champions League.

The Portuguese admitted he will have to take some “risks” with his team selection on Sunday. When asked how many changes he was anticipating, he said: “I have to see. Players like [Diogo] Dalot they are always ready, but today he is really tired.

“The guys who are at risk of injury, we will try to save them. We will see tomorrow [Friday].”

Opportunity: Ruben Amorim has confirmed Manchester United will hand more chances to Chido Obi

Quizzed on playing youngsters, Amorim added: "It is not the best moment or the best season to put kids in to play because they need a strong base to really show what they can do.

“But, in this moment, we need to do it and sometimes you have some surprises. It is a difficult moment and not the right moment for the kids to play. But if we have to do it, we will do it."

Amorim hinted at more chances to come for teenage striker Chido Obi, who is not eligible for the Europa League and, with Joshua Zirkzee missing the rest of the season with a hamstring injury, is now the main back-up for Rasmus Hojlund up front.

“Yes, I think so,” Amorim said of more minutes for Obi. “Chido when he played, he did quite well. Ayden [Heaven] just played – and I can be honest – because we had a lot of injuries in that moment. Today I think of him as my player. [Harry] Amass did really well [against Lyon].”

Andre Onana is unlikely to be rotated back out after earning back his place for the second leg against Lyon, having been dropped following his high-profile errors in France but then seen deputy Altay Bayindir also make a costly mistake in the 4-1 drubbing at Newcastle.

Victor Lindelof and Noussair Mazraoui are available, after both players had to leave Old Trafford on Thursday night due to personal issues.

No Matthijs de Ligt or Heaven leaves Amorim a little short on centre-backs to rest both Harry Maguire and Leny Yoro, with Jonny Evans now back in training but likely lacking match fitness after a long-term injury.

Mazraoui typically plays as part of the back three under Amorim, but could shift out to wing-back if Dalot needs a rest. Luke Shaw can also play both positions and will be targeting more minutes after giving away a clumsy penalty off the bench on Thursday.

Harry Amass will hope to start again, while Kobbie Mainoo, Mason Mount and Christian Eriksen will also be expected to do likewise after each coming off the bench against Lyon - Mainoo netting a brilliant equaliser before Maguire’s last-gasp winner in extra time.

Obi could well earn a first senior start if Amorim decides to rest Hojlund, while captain Bruno Fernandes could also be due a break - though his desire to play every match is well known.

United remain without Amad Diallo and Lisandro Martinez, while Toby Collyer has also been dealing with a knock of late.

Predicted Manchester United XI: Onana, Lindelof, Yoro, Shaw, Mazraoui, Mainoo, Eriksen, Amass, Mount, Bruno Fernandes, Hojlund

Injured: Martinez, Amad, Zirkzee, De Ligt, Heaven, Collyer

Doubt: Evans
