Manú, a former Benfica winger, has died aged 43 after a road traffic accident on Saturday night in Vermões, Sobral de Monte Agraço.

Benfica expressed deep sorrow in a statement on its website, noting his 17 appearances in 2006/07 and offering condolences to his family, friends and former team-mates.

Born on 28 August 1982 in Setúbal, he came through Vitória de Setúbal, O Sindicato and Alverca. He made his Liga debut for Alverca on 5 May 2002 against Braga, the first of 130 matches.

Spells with Modena and Carpenedolo in 2004/05, then Estrela da Amadora in 2005/06, preceded his move to Benfica in 2006. He spent the following season on loan at AEK.

He later played for Marítimo, Legia Warsaw, Beijing Guoan and Ermis Aradippou, returning to Vitória de Setúbal in 2014. After 14 games for his hometown club, he rejoined Ermis.

He finished his career in 2018/19 after stints with Cartaxo and Vilafranquense. A Setúbal native, he once shared a dressing room with Rui Costa, now Benfica’s president. The club has also mourned Silvino this year.
