Germany have announced their 26-man squad for this summer’s World Cup, although the reveal was done in slightly unusual fashion.
Throughout Wednesday morning, several players were confirmed one by one before head coach Julian Nagelsmann finally unveiled the full squad.
The biggest talking point is the return of Manuel Neuer. The Bayern Munich goalkeeper, now 40, is set to appear at his fifth World Cup despite stepping away from international football in 2024. His comeback has come as a surprise to many, but Nagelsmann has clearly decided to lean on the veteran’s experience for the tournament.
Another Bayern player making headlines is highly-rated teenager Lennart Karl. The 18-year-old has earned his first senior call-up and is one of the youngest players included in Germany’s squad.
Germany, four-time world champions, have been drawn in Group E alongside Ecuador, Curaçao and Ivory Coast. Their World Cup campaign gets underway on 14 June when they face Curaçao in Houston.
Nagelsmann’s side will once again head into the tournament among the favourites as they look to add another star to their famous history.
