Manuel Neuer starred in Bayern Munich’s UEFA Champions League victory against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu on Tuesday night. In doing so, the 40-year-old became the first goalkeeper since data collection to record nine saves against the Spanish giants at their home in a knockout-match, per Opta.

“Many made come incredible saves,” remarked Vincent Kompany, after Bayern’s 2-1 first leg win. “We needed those moments from him. There’s no success at this level without these moments from a goalkeeper, a defender, a striker.. and we’ll need that again next week.”

Manuel Neuer’s Bayern Munich future

Sitting on an expiring contract, no decision has been made on Neuer’s future, and there isn’t expected to be news any time soon. According to Max Eberl, Neuer wants to “play the game in April” before deciding on his future. “He doesn’t need to make any more compelling arguments,” he added. “He just needs to stay healthy, stay courageous and then we’ll sit down and discuss it.”
