Defense is one of the areas of their team that FC Barcelona are looking to strengthen in this summer transfer window. More particularly, the Catalans would be looking to reinforce their right flank. For this purpose, they are already in negotiations with Al-Hilal for the permanent transfer of Joao Cancelo, after his loan period ended at the end of the last season.
Meanwhile, the Blaugranes were reportedly also keeping an eye on some fullbacks from the market, in case their negotiations with the Saudi side did not end according to their wishes. One such player on their list was the Chelsea fullback Marc Cucurella.
Thus, it must have been bad news for Barcelona when Real Madrid officially announced the Spaniard’s signing on Monday. However, as Mundo Deportivo has reported, this transfer involving the Merengue club and the La Masia trained defender would still benefit the Blaugrana club, as they are set to get up to €1.35 million for training rights.
This is because of FIFA’s Solidarity Mechanism, which stipulates that 5% of any transfer fee must go to the clubs that trained the transferred player between the ages of 12 and 23. The percentage for the age bracket of 12-15 is 0.25%, while for the bracket 16-23, it is 0.5%, per year.
Thus, Barcelona would get 2.5% of the fixed €55 million that Real Madrid is set to pay for Marc Cucurella’s transfer. This sum would increase if some performance-based variables are met.
In addition to Barcelona, other clubs like Espanyol (€275,000), Getafe (€550,000) and Brighton (€275,000) would also benefit from this transfer under FIFA’s rules. Thus, although this transfer was not ideal for the Blaugranes from a sporting point of view, especially as Real Madrid are going to be their main rivals for La Liga and other domestic trophies next season, this still brings some financial gain for them.
