The Asturian coach lamented the lack of determination in both boxes, which condemned the Groguets against Copenhagen

Villarreal CF head coach Marcelino García Toral spoke to the media to analyse the defeat against FC Copenhagen (2-3), which leaves the Submarine without any chance of reaching the next stage of the UEFA Champions League.

The Asturian coach was unhappy with the result against the Danish side. “I am very disappointed. We expected to win our first Champions League match today. It is normal to be disappointed. It is a tough defeat for us.”

Despite the painful loss, Marcelino praised the effort of his players, who showed a clear desire to win the match. “We tried at all times. The attitude of the team was exemplary. The team gave everything and wanted to win, but we lacked determination in both boxes. With very little threat they scored twice. In the Champions League we have not been able to show the solidity we are demonstrating in LALIGA.”

Marcelino also reflected on the Submarine’s run in the top European competition. “It has not been good. We have not been able to beat two teams like Pafos or Copenhagen despite being a better team than them. We lacked a bit of luck and we did not control certain details in the matches. Today for example you cannot concede at the moments that we did. I feel sorry because this group of players does not deserve this but it is what it is. It will help us learn and improve.”

Finally, the head coach hopes that the continental elimination will not affect the team in LALIGA, where Villarreal are showing their best version. “It is not different to our previous results in the Champions League and it has not affected us. Now we will go and play against Levante with maximum ambition, respect and the desire to win, but always with humility.”
