Uruguay are dealing with fresh injury concerns on the eve of the World Cup, with Barcelona defender Ronald Araújo sustaining a minor muscle strain during preparations. He has left the Celeste camp to begin treatment in Spain and has not been removed from the squad list at this stage.
According to Coluna Do Fla, the player’s brother, Maikel Araújo, criticised Marcelo Bielsa’s backroom team on social media after the injury update.
Maikel had reshared Uruguay’s announcement about Ronald’s issue and wrote that players were being hurt days before the tournament. The Instagram story was later taken down.
Arrascaeta faced a similar episode. The Flamengo number 10 picked up a calf problem due to a high training load during exercises, and his club later issued a statement accusing the Celeste staff of disregarding his planned programme. He was at risk of missing the World Cup, but Uruguay confirmed his injury and still kept him on the list, with his return date uncertain.
Uruguay are in Group H. They open against Saudi Arabia in Miami on Monday 15 at 19:00 Brasília time, then meet Cape Verde on Sunday 21 June at 19:00, also in Miami. They finish the group against Spain on 26/06 at 21:00 in Akron.
