Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds United legacy was unmistakable at Wembley as England drew 1-1 with Uruguay, and he explained why he greeted former Leeds loanee Ben White before kick-off.

White tapped in at the far post to give England a 1-0 lead in the 81st minute, then Uruguay were awarded a late, controversial penalty for a foul by White, which Federico Valverde converted to level it.

Four years on from his promotion-winning spell at Elland Road, the 70-year-old led Uruguay at Wembley and made a point of visiting the England bench to see White. He had earlier spoken warmly about his time at Leeds.

Bielsa said: "I simply said hello to him. Obviously I have known him for a very long time. I was just very happy to see him and happy to see how he has developed in his career so I simply just saw him as I was sitting there and it was an opportunity to see him and say hello."

The question was posed by The Athletic at his post-match press conference.

Leeds supporters displayed Bielsa flags and sang his name outside and inside the stadium. After the match, fans stopped the Uruguay team bus for a photo, and Bielsa smiled and waved as his squad departed.
