Barry Douglas has retired from football at 36, the former Leeds United promotion hero confirming the decision on social media. The player said in a post that he was saying goodbye to the playing side of the game.
Douglas made 44 appearances for Leeds between 2018 and 2020, including 15 Championship outings in the 2019/20 title campaign under Marcelo Bielsa. He has been without a club since leaving St Johnstone last summer.
After a 2020/21 loan at Blackburn, he departed Elland Road in 2021 and rejoined Lech Poznan when his Whites contract ended. Poznan released him in July 2024 and St Johnstone signed him on a short-term deal from October 2024 to last summer.
The one-cap Scotland international finishes with 449 senior games, 28 goals and 68 assists. His honours include Championship titles with Wolves in 2018 and Leeds in 2020, two Polish crowns with Poznan in 2015 and 2022, and domestic cups in Poland and with Konyaspor in Türkiye.
Douglas reflected with pride on a career spent across several countries, thanking team-mates, staff and supporters. Tributes quickly arrived from former Leeds colleagues Kalvin Phillips, Mateusz Klich, Patrick Bamford and Luke Ayling.
