Santos have appointed Marcelo Frigerio as head coach of their women's team, the club announced. The 55-year-old, known as Tchelo, replaces Caio Couto, who was dismissed on Friday, and last worked at Mexican side Pumas.
His first match in charge of the Sereias da Vila comes against Palmeiras in the Campeonato Brasileiro Feminino on Monday at 20:00, at Palmeiras' stadium.
Frigerio said he was immensely proud to join a giant club and highlighted the weight of Santos in the women's game. He described the Sereias da Vila as a club with a wonderful history and said he had long wanted to work there, adding he was happy to arrive.
Santos are on a difficult run, with three draws and one defeat in their last four league games, a sequence that has dropped them out of the knockout qualification places.
After assessing recent matches, Frigerio believes the squad can compete well and said their quality helped convince him to take the job. He said supporters can expect hard work, seriousness and professionalism, and an organised side with a strong will to win.
Born in Milan, Frigerio began his career in Brazil and came to prominence when he led Equatorial Guinea at the 2011 World Cup. In the domestic game he has worked at Grêmio, 3B, Foz Cataratas, Sport Atibaia and Avaí/Kindermann. Abroad he has managed Changchun Volkswagen in China and Atletico Oristano in Italy, as well as Pumas.
