Marco Silva may finally join Benfica, with the coach back on the club’s radar years after a 2015 approach led by Luís Filipe Vieira stalled.

Record writes that Vieira, alongside Domingos Soares de Oliveira, met Silva soon after his Sporting exit. Talks were positive, yet the move did not advance because Vieira had already pledged to keep Rui Vitória, a promise that was kept. Silva, frustrated but respectful, welcomed the fact that the commitment was honoured within the Benfica hierarchy.

His path then moved away from the Luz, and years later the link has resurfaced. José Mourinho’s departure has opened the head coach role just as Silva reaches the end of his Fulham contract, easing alignment between all parties.

Silva is enthusiastic about the prospect and believes he would have the means to challenge consistently for the national title, a long held career goal. Those close to him feel a return to Portugal would only make sense to coach Benfica, which brings an agreement closer.

With circumstances finally aligned, Silva is preparing to take charge at the Estádio da Luz with his staff, including Fernando Ferreira, formerly the first team goalkeeping coach from 2018/2019 to 2024/2025.
