Marco Silva will not be Benfica’s highest-paid coach despite claims he was poised to be, and remains behind José Mourinho, who is set to join Real Madrid. His departure from Fulham is already confirmed.

Record writes that Mourinho’s contract, still in force, is financially superior to the package on the table for the likely future Benfica coach. Rui Costa improved the initial offer, but Benfica did not grant full concessions, so previous Mourinho salary levels were not exceeded.

The report adds that the renewal proposal presented to Mourinho was higher than the agreement for Silva. Silva is also not set to receive any signing-on bonus.

After five years at Fulham, the 48-year-old sought a more ambitious challenge, prioritising a project that consistently competes for titles and features in Europe over pay.

He believes a successful spell at the Luz could open doors, but does not see a return to Portuguese football as a step back. Instead, he views it as a chance to lead a major club and put it back on a winning track.
