Marcos Senesi, newly signed by Tottenham, has been called into Argentina’s World Cup squad, replacing Marseille defender Leonardo Balerdi, who has withdrawn with a calf injury.

According to L'Équipe, the former Bournemouth centre-back, a free agent this summer and signed by Tottenham on Wednesday, received his call on Thursday night.

Balerdi suffered the calf problem on Friday and will miss the tournament, which runs from 11 June to 19 July.

Senesi, 29, comes off a full season with Bournemouth, playing 37 of the Cherries’ 38 Premier League matches, all as a starter.

His senior international experience stands at three caps. He debuted in 2022, then rejoined the squad in October 2025 for his first start, before another call-up in March. He was also included in Lionel Scaloni’s expanded 55-man provisional list.
