Omar Marmoush helped Egypt secure their place in the last-16 of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations with a hard-fought 1-0 win over South Africa.
Egypt, who played the entire second half with 10 men, maintained their 100% start thanks to a Mohamed Salah penalty.
City forward Marmoush was on target in Egypt’s 2-1 victory over Zimbabwe in their opening Group B encounter.
And he came close to firing them ahead again in the 21st minute with a wicked free-kick that curled inches wide.
The attacking midfielder had been brought down by a scything tackle from Teboho Mokoena as he ran at the Bafana Bafana defence and was then narrowly off target from 20 yards.
Two sides who are among the favourites to win the tournament were cancelling each other out until the game exploded into life just before half-time.
After a VAR check, Egypt were awarded a penalty when Khuliso Mudau caught Salah and the Liverpool forward scored from the spot himself.
Moments later, the Pharoahs were reduced to 10 men when Mohamed Hany was shown a second yellow card for a clumsy challenge on Mokoena.
With the focus on protecting their lead, Egypt replaced Marmoush at half-time as they sat deep in their own half.
They survived an injury time penalty appeal for handball and goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy made a couple of big saves in the second half to secure all three points.
Egypt’s final group game is on Monday 29 December when they face Angola at 16:00 (UK) in Agadir.
