Gerónimo Rulli (33) had a historically busy first half at the Bernabeu. The Argentine made an incredible 10 saves as he kept Real Madrid’s attackers – largely – at bay.

Olympique de Marseille, making their long-awaited return to the UEFA Champions League, had to endure a barrage in the first half. They were heavily reliant on Argentina international Rulli. The goalkeeper made 10 saves for Les Phocéens, more than any other player in a single half of Champions League football since Opta began taking records back in the 2003-04 season.

OM briefly led in the Spanish capital. Against the run of play, Timothy Weah gave Roberto De Zerbi’s side the lead with a well-taken effort inside the box, following a Mason Greenwood lay-off. However, Real Madrid quickly levelled through Kylian Mbappé, who beat Rulli with his effort from the spot. It can after Rodrygo was felled by Geoffrey Kondogbia inside the box, as the sides went into half-time level at 1-1, in large part thanks to Rulli.
