Celtic manager Martin O’Neill has addressed Kasper Schmeichel’s future as the first pick goalkeeper after some recent poor displays. The Danish Internationalist suffered as a result of Wilfried Nancy’s chaotic setup, which left one central defender and left the goalkeeper exposed. There had been calls for Vil Sinisalo to get a run of games but MON has cooled chat of a change in nets.
Speaking ahead of Saturday’s Scottish Premiership clash against Dundee United, O’Neill stated that Schmeichel will remain as No.1 as the Irishman looks to get the experienced keeper back to his best after a bruising few weeks.
“I don’t know enough about his counterpart, the young Finnish lad, who is a very, very fine lad. He didn’t play in any of the games that I had, but he played against Livingston.
“Kasper’s got a lot of experience, I think a really, really terrific goalkeeper. Like everything else, you have to keep proving yourself. And this is it, I now, back again, have to do the same thing. And it’s not a throwaway line, it’s absolutely true. And this idea that people don’t have to, you know, I don’t see it.

“So, if I can get, let’s say in terms of just getting Kasper back to what he did for me, and that’s very, very short term, that would be fine. He made some big saves for us, big moments, you know.
“We had a big save against Rangers in the semi-final, he made a big save at one-each out in Feyenoord. Big save when the boy’s through, makes the save again. Those are the things he’s good at.’’
O’Neill was responsible for building confidence back within the team and it will be his aim to get Schmeichel and a number of his first team colleagues to get back to their best. The manager has stated, quite candidly, that the club require to add quality to the squad. Celtic require to add additional attackers, namely up front and out wide. Kelechi Iheanacho is expected to return back from injury in the next few weeks but there is still a gaping hole in attack for the club to resolve before the end of the window.
