After a dismal run of seven Championship games without victory that stretched back to December 1st, Chris Davies' side were able to edge their way past Frank Lampard's men, who have also faltered in recent weeks, largely down to the goalscoring presence of their summer recruit from Werder Bremen.

Ducksch put Birmingham in front after just six minutes with his fourth goal of the season after calmly slotting home a sublime cross from debutant Wagner, who saw a reported €2.3m (£2m) switch from Major League Soccer outfit, Philadelphia Union, confirmed less than 48 hours beforehand.

That proved to be just the start of the drama as a further four goals were scored between Blues and Coventry throughout the 90-plus minutes, with the last of those also coming through Ducksch after 63 minutes as he turned home a low through ball from Patrick Roberts in front of the Tilton to ensure a critical three points for the West Midlands side.

Results later in the afternoon ensured that Blues moved up to 13th in the second tier standings, level on points with Leicester City, who host West Bromwich Albion at the King Power Stadium on Monday night.

Given his reputation across the Atlantic, Wagner's signing was met with plenty of excitement from Bluenoses, with the German set to give plenty of attacking and defensive qualities to help aid a play-off bid for the remainder of the season for Davies.

He also provides the Second City club with some much-needed depth in this department alongside Alex Cochrane, whilst it was exclusively reported by Football League World that Lee Buchanan is expected to depart on a loan basis after 12 months on the sidelines.

The 28-year-old certainly lived up to the billing against the Sky Blues before being replaced by Alfons Sampsted with 19 minutes to go, and is already feeling the love of his fellow German.

Throughout his time in the MLS, Wagner was named in the division's 'Best XI' on two occasions, including the 2025 campaign.

Much of the reasoning behind said inclusions was his influence as a deep creative outlet, posting a remarkable tally of 10 goals and 54 assists in 253 appearances for Union.

Davies stated after Birmingham's dismal showing in the 3-0 defeat at Watford on New Year's Day that he hoped Wagner's arrival would be confirmed in order for him to potentially play some part against the Sky Blues, and he was immediately handed his debut by the 40-year-old in place of Cochrane, who has suffered a handful of injury and fitness issues so far this season.

After just six minutes, the experienced full-back registered his first goal contribution in royal blue as he was afforded acres of space to drift down the left flank, before providing Ducksch with an inch-perfect assist to side-foot the ball past Carl Rushworth.

Lewis Koumas then restored Blues' lead after 17 minutes as Josh Eccles immediately responded to the striker's opener with a curling strike past James Beadle, before Ducksch silenced the visiting supporters on 63 minutes with his second, just three minutes after Ellis Simms drove Coventry's second equaliser of the game home.

Although Ducksch, who has now scored two 'braces' at St. Andrew's after his two-goal haul against Norwich City in November, was awarded the official Player of the Match award, Wagner was not too far behind after an impressive maiden cameo in B9.

As such, Ducksch took to his Instagram story hours after full-time, returning a complimentary message from Wagner with the response of "thanks for the assist bro."

Issuing his thoughts after a whirlwind three-day period, Wagner revealed post-match that he had some words with Ducksch about providing the tall striker with an assist.

“When you write a book you always want to start like that. I was a little bit nervous, it’s a new style for me and a new stadium with new fans," he said.

“I joked with Marvin that I would find him and he produced a great finish so I’m really happy for him too.”

After a manic Christmas and New Year period, Blues can now enter a clear week of preparation ahead of their FA Cup tie at Cambridge United on Saturday evening, before returning to league action at Swansea City on January 17th.
